THE HINDU VOCABULARY

economic convergence (noun) – it is the hypothesis that poorer economies’ per capita incomes will tend to grow at faster rates than richer economies. As a result, all economies should eventually converge & be at the same level in terms of per capita income.

lag behind (phrasal verb) – trail, fall back, grow/develop slowly.

bridge (verb) – join, link, connect/unite.

sustained (adjective) – continuous, uninterrupted, constant.

albeit (conjunction) – though, even though, however.

per capita (adverb & adjective) – per person, for each, individually.

divergence (noun) – difference, deviation, variance.

fortunes (noun) – circumstances, state of affairs, conditions.

fall behind (phrasal verb) – default, be overdue, lag.

gross domestic product (GDP) (noun) – a measure of economic activity in a country. It is the total value of a country’s annual output of goods and service.

come along (verb) – progress, develop, improve.

burgeoning (adjective) – growing, increasing rapidly.

fiscal deficit (noun) – the difference between total expenditure and total income of the government.

profligate (adjective) – irresponsible, reckless; unprincipled/corrupt.
